Once a baby elephant was given to a lady, and soon it grew up to be a big elephant. It was known as Granny's Blackie because it was black and belonged to an old lady. Granny's Blackie did nothing but play with the children, and soon the old lady was poor and could not work very well. So one morning Blackie went in search of work, and he found some. Some men were trying to pull carts over a stream crossing, and they were having trouble. They found Blackie, and told him that they would give him two silver coins per wagon he pulled across the river. Blackie saw a chance to make money for Granny, and pulled all of them. Then the man who had offered money counted out a coin per wagon, but Blackie did not even touch the wagon till he got two coins per wagon. Then Blackie went to Granny and gave her the money, and after that they both worked together.
